International Women's Day!!!!
How Feminism Has Impacted My Life
It’s International Women’s Day, so I felt it was necessary to talk about something that’s made a huge impact on my life. The thing about feminism is that even though it’s become a more revived movement with movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp there’s still a lot of people who think feminism is some man-hating movement. In reality though that’s so far from what feminism actually is. By definition feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. Feminism does not seek for women to have more rights than men, but to have equal rights as men.
When I think about feminism I think about lifting other women up, not tearing women down. I think of all the strong women of the #MeToo movement who were brave enough to speak about their experiences with sexual assault, I think of the women in India who are organizing protests to fight against acid attacks and child marriage. Many people argue that women have reached equality in the west so there is no need for feminism anymore. The first problem with this is that yes I agree white straight women do not face as much inequality as others but the biggest issue is that feminism does not mean I want equality for me, it means I want equality for all.
Feminism seeks to change things in society we don’t even realize and it doesn’t have to do only with women. Because of feminism I know I have new found confidence and I know my strength. I know never to expect less than I deserve, and I have made the best girl gang of confident and uplifting women through this movement. Feminism means I not only fight for the women who are like me, but especially for the women who are not. I’m a feminist for child brides in Yemen, trans-women who are fighting for basic respect around the globe, women in Africa who are not given access to adequate healthcare, for the housewives, for the bad bitch CEO’s, for the trailblazers, I’m a feminist for me but most of all, I’m a feminist for you.
