Keeping It Together When It's Stressful
I know I am not wrong to say that we all go through stressful times in life. We have papers, tests, new jobs, new kids, new places, and about a million other things in this life that causes us stress. I will be quick to admit that I am someone who often enjoys stressing myself out more when I'm stressed. Essentially I become stressed about being stressed which just adds to my stress, haha. If I've learned anything with growing up it would have to be that people honestly have no idea what is going on no matter how old we get. Even the people who we feel like have it all together... THEY DON'T and no one does! We all experience change and growth and sometimes that change is sudden and unexpected and we just have to roll with the punches. Check out below my ways to keep it together when life gets stressful.
#1 Practice mindfulness
A couple times throughout various Instagram and blog posts I've talked about the importance of mindfulness in our daily lives and this is no exception. Whenever I'm feeling stressed I like to turn down the lights, give myself alone time, and sit and reflect on the day. Instead of focusing on changing how you feel, let yourself feel your emotions. To put myself in a good state of meditation I try to focus on everything around me: the sound of the train, my legs touching my yoga mat, my hair resting on my shoulder, the tap of water droplets hitting the bathtub. I've found that doing this before I start meditation really helps center my thinking. I try to do this for about 15-20 minutes every day and it always leaves me feeling washed over with calmness after.
#2 Don't be scared to reach out
WE ALL NEED HELP SOMETIMES. I honestly cannot say this enough. I feel like our society trains us to think that we shouldn't share how we feel unless we are feeling 100% and that's not healthy. Surround yourself with a healthy circle of people, and truly open up with those around you. We all struggle and sometimes no matter how independent we may be, we all need someone to lean on from time to time. If you are like me, then it means it's very hard for you to open up. At least in my situation, I always hate opening up to people because I feel like a burden or something. However, that couldn't be more far from the truth. Whoever is in your circle, whether it be friends or family... they want you to succeed. Opening up to people can be difficult, but it really does take off a world of stress when you realize you have so many people rooting for you and that care about you.
#3 Prioritize what's important
Being a college student, I totally get the struggle of having about 17,000 things to do and what feels like no time to do it. I am actually the queen of procrastinating and honestly the biggest reason for my stress is often that I don't prioritize things. Recently, I've been getting in the habit of making a list at the beginning of the week of everything that needs to get done so that I don't get blindsided by some assignment I totally forgot about. By doing this you also get to get that little surge of satisfaction by crossing things off your list, and you know what all you have to do so you can pick and choose when to do things. Of course procrastination will never truly end no matter how old we get, however we can minimize the stress that comes from waiting until the last minute to do everything.
As you get older, it honestly doesn't get any easier. We will always experience stress throughout our lives, but it is how we handle that stress that determines the outcomes of our experiences. Especially if you are someone who likes to do a lot, it can get overwhelming. Practicing self-care is the MOST important thing we can do for ourselves. Don't push yourself so hard that you never enjoy things because of overwhelming feelings of anxiety or stress. Hope you all enjoyed this, cheers!
